tricky t-day ~ Misty's workout

Well, trick training time, has turned into workout time. Misty has been getting stronger, and as a result, so has Oreo. Once the physio ball is out, he demands equal time.

Ballwork is how we start each morning, and Misty has made tremendous gains in strength. Unfortunately, she still lacks confidence on top of the ball, so most of our work is done with her two front paws up on the ball. I do put her on the ball each session, with hopes she will be able to do "real" ballwork soon.

The instructional video does say that some dogs take longer to get used to the ball, and I guess Misty is one of those dogs.

Ergo, no trick this week, but if you want to see Misty doing some of her ball work, watch this video. It's really boring, and I recorded it more for me. I wish I had a "before" video from our first session, because, boy, is there a huge difference in her legs.

This morning, Misty did stand on top of the ball for a few seconds all by herself! Again, a big change from how she looks at the end of this video, which I shot on Saturday.

Looks like quite the workout. Was she shaking when she was on top? Is she afraid of it, or is that just a part of balancing on a big squishy yellow thing?

It's great that Misty is doing some ball work and how awesome that it is already strengthening her legs! Maybe she would worry less on top if you put the ball between like the couch and the coffee table and sat on a chair in front of it and she could jump on the couch and then walk onto the ball? Ricky gets on like that and then I let him nibble on a treat all the time - he is so focused on the treat, he doesn't even notice he is standing on the ball! Now he can't wait to hop on and I give him little bites like you were doing as we go.

Misty looks so good doing this ballwork! How I wish they would sell something like this peanut here in Malaysia. I think it would be good for Eva too. However, importing it here is probably quite expensive!!
I hope Misty continues to get stronger with each day!!

Dawn, the shaking is usually a sign of fatigue for Oreo, but with misty, I think she is still learning how to adjust her body. She didn't shake at all this morning.

Ricky, that's a great idea. I did start wedging the ball between the couch & table, but haven't tried having her step on the ball from the couch. I'll try that tomorrow. Thanks.

Have you tried the balance discs? I bet Misty would love one of those, I used them for Breeze a lot and I really like those and they are on the floor although if she is getting used to the ball....You look so patient taking your time with Misty, that was so sweet to watch, she looks like she is doing great with her rehb! What a great heart Misty has and what a trooper!

PS love watching Oreo supervising the whole process making sure about what is going on, and I bet making sure he gets his turn, what a cutie!

Kathy, I haven't tried the discs. Maybe that would be a good Christmas gift for misty.

Looks like quite the workout. I hope Misty builds up her strength and that you get some definate answers in the New Year. It sure is a worry to not really know what is going on with them. Big Hugs!!!

Wow, she is doing really well. I wish Miley would relax on the ball with her front legs on. She just keep trying to jump on the ball. I also use one of the mats you put under rugs to keep from slipping. I lay it over the ball to give the dog more traction. Diana

Diana, that's a good idea. I think I have one of those rug things lying around somewhere.

Oreo always has to jump on too, even when I'm not holding the ball. He's going to have a horrible wipe out sometime.

Well done Misty. I love it at the end when Misty is on the ball and Oreo is running round, it looks like he worried in case she falls off and he is running round ready to catch her.

Well done on the workout with Misty. She looks wonderful in the little video! The exercise ball is very good. I bought one two years ago and I always do a little exercise with the dogs in winter to keep them fit and with Sing's injury, that certainly helps too! I am so glad to see Misty has improved.

Misty looks so cute doing her workouts. Looks like they are working pretty good. That Oreo is up to his tricks pacing around the peanut ball. Helen

That awesome that you're already seeing improvement in Misty's strength. I keep thinking that I need to start getting my older dogs on our ball now, while they still have good muscle tone and maybe it will be an easier adjustment for them.

Dare loves her balance balls and her disc. I think that the disc might be a really good idea for Misty. It was how I started balance work with Dare when she was a puppy. The nice thing is you don't have to worry about it rolling or you having to wedge it. :-)
